Character Name: Astrid Hofferson.

Canon: How to Train Your Dragon.
Canon Point: Post-Defenders of Berk.
Character Information: Astrid's wiki page.

Personality:
Being born in Berk meant being a warrior, and Astrid was always a good example of that. Not only did she show no fear in the face of danger, she was proficient with weapons and had a brain to boot. Her training sessions make the other vikings groan at their difficulty or seriousness, and she never focuses on one area of expertise. While her main weapon, even outside the first film, is an axe, she mentions having a well-used dagger, shows plenty of sword-based knowledge, easily fights off enemies with just a shield, and is the top of the class in hand-to-hand combat. Her skill on a dragon is likewise high, hard to beat in both a race and in a battle. This is due to her tireless training and focus. However, those warrior qualities aren't the only ones she's been sure to hone. While some of her tribemates think it's fine and dandy to stick to the more brutish aspects of being a viking, Astrid also takes the time to nurture her brain and beauty. While in normal society this would make her a triple threat, one of Astrid's main frustrations is when she's underestimated. She takes pride in what she's all been able to accomplish, and when that's passed over she will either react by throwing an axe tantrum or seething quietly, planning ahead for the next opportunity.

Although it's in her nature to always be the winner, Astrid isn't afraid to own up to when she's been wrong. Always moving forward to better herself means forgiving the past, and so it not only doesn't take much to get her to correct her mistakes, but it also will be no time at all until she's pointing out all the things done wrong by everyone else. Sometimes she's encouraging, taking the proper seat as a mentor, but other times her words can be scathing. Unfortunately, this doesn't change based on what she's judged the others to be able to handle, but is set into what her mood is at the time. On the bright side, with each day moving forward, Astrid doesn't have to temper all that rage anymore, and by the time she gets to How to Train Your Dragon 2 she's become far more cheerful and well-adjusted. Even in the series Astrid is often the light showing what a good sport is, unless specifically targeted for goading, so having dragons and Hiccup in her life has calmed her considerably.

As Fishlegs says, "she's mean, but in a nice way." While she acts as a defender to her friends and tribemates, she isn't above teasing the others. Hiccup, being the closest to her, gets the brunt of it, though the things she chooses to tease him about are a lot tamer than with Fishlegs, who she will scare to tears if she's not careful (and isn't likely to regret it), or Snotlout, who gets an even bigger backlash thanks to all the flirting he tries to do. Just because she's quick with a quip doesn't make her any less diligent about protecting those weaker than her (whether in strength or brain power) as those are the ones able to inspire her to be the best Astrid she can be. Even prior to forming a friendship, Astrid doesn't ostracize Hiccup like the rest of the Viking teens, seeming to be more disappointed and frustrated by his shortcomings. Her anger and suspicions grow to a bursting point -- no one likes to be on the outside of the loop, especially not when being in the loop apparently means getting specialized training -- before dropping off as she discovers the truth. She easily takes to things that she may not have been able to trust before, which is probably helped by her ability to hold her own and inflated ego on that matter, and has enough curiosity to be utterly fascinated when introduced to new viewpoints. If she's not laughing her ass off at how ridiculous it is, of course.

Even with her vigilance and training, Astrid seems to have tireless energy. Whether she's joking around, flying into battle (figuratively or literally), or even just talking with someone, she can be a bit boisterous and animated. Sure, she's not throwing her arms around like a certain someone, but there's a lot of brightness in her voice and actions that suggest a need to be doing, be involved. Her mother henning of the Hairy Hooligans kicks this into overdrive, and when bad things happen she's eager to try to make up for it, as seen in Gift of the Night Fury. Sure, she goes a little overboard and winds up blowing up more than a few houses and inflicting her terrible cooking concoction on her friends, but it's clear that Astrid's got her heart in the right place. She doesn't want her people to be down, even when the dragons leaving has her heart broken, too. Still, her enthusiasm has its limits, and when she's out of patience she most often resorts to her fists. The times she turns the situation on its head instead of resorting to violence, her efforts are most certainly rewarded! But, as shown when she starts mooning over Snotlout like he's the light of her life to freak him out enough to stop his flirting, this isn't something she can keep up, often because it goes against her nature to be a fake. She's Astrid Hofferson and is going to show her true colors until the day she dies, hopefully alongside someone who loves her for it.
